Ukraine women captures second gold

27th October, Petaling Jaya: Daryna Velychko, Kateryna Kovalchuk and Alla Diachenko edged Chinese Taipei, 183-171 in the final match to capture the 24th Deaflympics Bowling Competitions 2021 Women's Trios gold medal for Ukraine.

The Ukrainian trio was lucky to come away with a victory over second-seed Kim Taisoon, Lee Misook and Choi Seonkyeong of Korea, 170-145 although failing to convert two splits in the foruth and sixth frames in the second semi-final match. Korea themseles had three open frames.

Doubles bronze medallist, Lin Hsiang-Tzu and Hsueh Hsiu-Chen with Huang Shu-Min took their revenge over Doubles gold medallist and top-seed, Park Sunok and Lee Chanmi with An Hyoungsook after they ousted the Korean trio, 187-171 in the first semi-final match to face Ukraine in the final.

In the final match, Chinese Taipei encountered an early split in their opening frame to give Ukraine a slight advantage. But the Taiwanese recovered with a double strike in the fourth and fifth frames to draw level mid-way through the match with Ukraine.

Chinese Taipei missed a crucial single pin in the ninth frame to hand the advantage back to the Ukrainians. But they too had a bad break when they stumbled to a big split in the tenth and final frame. Chinese Taipei had a slim chance of winning but they too suffered a similar split gifting the Ukrainian women their first gold medal.

The Taiwanese took home their second silver medal of the competition while the two Korean trios settled for two bronze medals. Korea remained in the lead of the Medal Tally with 2 gold, 1 silver and 5 bronze medals.

In the earlier qualifying round over two blocks of 3 games each, the second Korean trio led the first block and the first Korean trio took over the lead in the second block until the final game. Korea 2 totaled 3320 to take top spot, 62 pins ahead of their team-mates.

Ukraine finished third with 3138 while Chinese Taipei earned their place in the semi-finals in fourth position with 3123. Two bronze and Doubles gold medallist, Lee Chanmi of Korea led the Women's All-Events with 3406 from 18 games.

Two bronze medallists, Lin Hsiang-Tzu and Hsueh Hsiu-Chen trailed the Korean in second and third positions with 3343 and 3289 respectively. There will be a rest day tomorrow, when players and officials can take time off for some sight-seeing.

Mr Ko Ming Liang, Vice President of MSDeaf awarded the medals to the winners while Ms Jasmine Choo Mei Lin gave away the mascots.

Competition will resume with the Men's and Women's Team of 5 event to be contested together over two blocks of 3 games each on October 29. The top four teams based on total pinfalls, will advance to the semi-finals and final shootout.

The top 24 Men and top 24 Women based on 24 games played in four events, will qualify for the Masters Elimination Knockout Finals over best-of-3 format on October 30 followed by the closing ceremony and ending the week long competition.
